Legionella are pathogenic bacteria

The pathogens find good growing conditions particularly in artificial water systems such as water pipes in multiple dwellings. The bacteria reproduce extremely fast at water temperatures between 25 and 45 degrees Celsius. Factors such as old and galvanised pipes, rust, limescale, biofilms or water pipes that are not used for longer periods further promote their reproduction. In this way, one single Legionella bacteria can lead to millions within a few days.

The greatest risk for the residents of multiple dwellings is in the shower. The Legionella can enter directly into the human lungs through the sprayed water. A Legionella infection can cause flu-like symptoms or serious cases of pneumonia. At worst, these diseases can be fatal. According to scientific estimates, up to 30,000 people get sick in Germany every year due to Legionella in the drinking water.
